WordpoolCome and join in with a whole host of events to celebrate Wordpool 2008 that will guarantee to bring something new and fun to keep the whole family entertained.  

‘Wordpool ‘08’ kicks off on 2 October with a ceremony opened by the Mayor, Cllr Mary Smith, at Matcham Court where there will be the opportunity to watch performances by well known writer, Terry Caffrey, as well as pupils from local schools. Other activities on the day include a meet and greet with crime writer, Kate Ellis, a murder mystery night with Martin Edwards from the Murder Squad and a concert by Four Play Jazz in the dining room at Victoria Hospital.   

Highlights include:

Three Incredible Talking Men - Grand Theatre Studio - Frdiay 3 October - 7.30pm - 10pm
The ultimate performance poetry event with Martin Newell (the Independent's Pop Poet), Will Holloway and Steve Tasane. Promises to be a fun night to remember!

A Whale of a Tale - Stanley Park  - Sunday 5 October 11.30am - 3.30pm
See a performance of a ‘Mariner's Tale’ presented by Circo Rum Ba Ba, a highly experienced women's theatre company. An ancient ‘sea salt’ invites visitors to enter a spectacular 50 ft. inflatable sperm whale and will lead them around a living museum of deep-sea wonders.   

Flax Books - FYC (154 - 158 Church Street) - Monday 6 October 10.30am - 3pm
Flax Books editor Sarah Hymas is joined by Maya Chowdhry and Mollie Baxter for a day of discussion, readings and workshops exploring the joys and pitfalls of digital publication through practical workshops around Facebook and Digital Poetry.

Il Postino - Blackpool Odeon - Wednesday 8 October 6pm - 8.15pm
A special screening of  the film ‘Il Postino’ at Blackpool’s Odeon cinema, introduced by Blackpool’s Poet in Residence John Siddique, who will talk about how the film and the work of South American poet, Neruda, has influenced his writing.  

An evening with A.L. Kennedy - West Coast Cafe - Wednesday 8 October 7.30pm - 9.30pm
Alison is a writer and stand up comedienne who has been described by the Sunday Telegraph as "One of the most brilliant writers of her generation."

Grand Splash of Poetry - Little Marton Mill - Thursday 9 October 1.30pm - 3pm
The week of events will conclude with a grand splash of poetry on National Poetry Day, where the Mayor, Cllr Mary Smith, will be back to open this free event. Children from Mereside Primary School will present poems that were written under poet Terry Caffrey’s guidance.
