Children and parents across Blackpool will be learning top tips about using the internet safely, as part of Safer Internet Week.
Blackpool Council is joining up with local schools and colleges, as well as Lancashire Police, to deliver a series of workshops throughout the week which will teach people how to make the most of the internet while remaining safe.
Safer Internet Day 2012 will take place on Tuesday 7 February and will centre on the theme “Connecting generations and educating each other”, where users young and old are encouraged to “discover the digital world together.”
Awareness of e-safety will be raised during the events, which are tailored for all members of the community, including parents, students and teachers.
E-safety week highlights the ongoing work in schools to make sure children and parents are able to make the most of the internet but can also stay safe from potential dangers.
Cllr Ivan Taylor, Cabinet Member for Education, said: “We all know that the internet is an incredible tool for learning, no matter what age you are.
“It can also be a dangerous place however and people need to be aware of how to keep safe while surfing the web.
“These sessions will teach parents and their children the best ways to explore the internet safely, where they can make the most of all the information on offer but also keep themselves protected.”
Lancashire Constabulary will also be holding an interactive web chat, via the force website www.lancashire.police.uk and simultaneously on www.facebook.com/lancspolice . Residents are invited to submit their on-line safety questions to Det Chief Insp Hazel Stewart from 12.30pm – 1.30pm on Tuesday 7 February.
DCI Stewart said: ““The internet is now a major part of most people’s lives so it is important that it is being used safely. The fact that the internet is now in most people’s homes and places of work means it is easier for criminals to target people online.
“The web chat will hopefully allow people to ask us their questions and we can then give important advice that will help keep them safe online.”
