Pavements for pedestrians
Following concerns from members of the public, Blackpool Council is reminding cyclists that it is illegal to cycle on the pavement.

Cllr Maxine Callow, Cabinet Member for Tourism and Regeneration, said: “The Highway Code states that cyclists must not cycle on a pavement. On the lead up to becoming a cycle town over the last few years Blackpool Council has put in place measures to help make cycling on the roads safer. These include cycle lanes, advanced stop lines and toucan crossings which cyclists are encouraged to use. As the cycling town project develops more facilities will be provided for cyclists.”
In some places across the town segregated cycle paths are provided, allowing cyclists to share the pavement with pedestrians. When using these cyclists should keep to the side intended for bicycles as the pedestrian side remains a footpath.

For those that are not confident about cycling on the road or have concerns about cycling in traffic, training is available through Blackpool Council’s on- road cycle training cycle sessions. Individual, group and family sessions are available for all levels of cyclists. Contact cycling@blackpool.gov.uk or ring 01253 476182 to book a place.

Other road users are also reminded that they can help make the roads safer for everyone by watching out for cyclists. Drivers in particular are advised to give cyclists extra room and to look out for them, particularly at junctions.

Pedestrians are also advised to look out for cyclists where there is a segregated cycle lane on a pavement and to stay on the pedestrian side of the pavement so they do not get into the path of a cyclist. All road users are advised to make sure they can see and be seen. Cyclists must use a white front light and a red rear light when riding their bike at dusk and in the dark. Cyclists and pedestrians are also advised to wear bright and reflective clothing, which will stand out in the day and at night.
