Dance development delivers a programme of dance activities for young people across Blackpool. It is aimed at engaging new people in creative dance opportunities and supporting talented young dancers in developing their skills. The programme also focuses on supporting local professionals, providing training, advice and where possible, employment opportunities.
The programme is funded by the National Lottery through Arts Council England and Blackpool Council.

Fylde Coast Youth Dance Company
In September 2014, we held our second audition for new members of the Fylde Coast Youth Dance COmpany. The company meets every fortnight and supports talented young dancers to develop dance technique, choreographic skills, work with professional choreographers and dance companies and create high quality performance work. During the first year of the company, they were successful in gaining places in UDance North West Dance Platform, Lancashire Youth Dance Festival and as one of only 8 companies from England, Wales and Northern Ireland who went to Glasgow to take part in the first ever Commonwealth Youth Dance Festival. We hope to emulate the great success of our first year. To see what the company are up to, follow them on Twitter@FCYDC. For more information about the next audition which will take place in July 2015, please keep checking the dance blog.
Contemporary dance class
To support dancers in developing their contemporary dance technique and to strengthen their chances at the Fylde Coast Youth Dance audition, we have set up a weekly contemporary dance class which takes place every Monday, 4.45pm - 5.45pm at Blackpool Central Library. The class is just £1 and works on a vast range of dance technique, allowing you to contribute ideas of what you would like to work on and learn. The class is run by experienced dance artist Sarah Lockwood.
If you wish to join the class, please email email@example.com of simply turn up!
We have just supported 12 young people to pass their Arts Award in Dance! (9 Bronze, 2 Silver and 1 Gold). The young people get the chance to meet dancers, choreographers and teachers from the local area, create their own dance for their arts challenge and organise their very own dance event! The Arts Award allows young people to develop leadership skills and explore the arts in more detail in a practical way.
We will be recruiting for Gold Arts Award places in January 2015 and for Silver and Bronze places later in 2015. To register your interest in the Arts Award, please email firstname.lastname@example.org.

Young people's dance apprentice scheme
This scheme provides a young person aged 16 - 19 with a paid work experience placement for 5 months. The placement gives them an insight into the wider dance sector, working alongside the dance development office, shadowing local dance teachers, attending events and workshops and meeting professionals across the industry. The placement is tailor-made for each individual to ensure they get the most out of their time with us. Our fourth placement begins in January with Melissa Gandhi. Follow thedance blog to see what they get up to!
Dance careers advice tour
We are touring a practical workshop led by 4 dance professionals from different areas of the dance industry with different levels of experience and training. The workshops are visiting schools and colleges across the Fylde Coast to provide young dancers with information about a full range of dance careers and give advice on how to progress further in their chosen role.
Community dance showcase
As part of the Gold Arts Award, two young people worked alongside the Dance Development Officer to create a community dance showcase for dance groups of all ages and styles across Blackpool, Wyre and Fylde , which took place at the Winter Gardens in October 2013. The showcase brought together 12 community groups who performed to a sellout audience. The event was a huge success and a new pathway for showcasing dance in our area. We hope to continue this success in years to come.
