The adopted highway refers to any road / footway that is maintained at public expense by the local authority. These will be maintained at the standards set by the authority and receive regular maintenance and safety inspections.
For a road to be adopted as part of the highway network:
- An existing private road is brought up to the local authorities standards and has been accepted under a section 38 agreement
- A new road has been constructed by a developer to the standards required for the highway to be adopted
