Adult Carers

Adult Carers You are a carer if you support a relative, spouse, partner or friend who cannot manage on his or her own. You do not have to live with the person, nor do you have to be the only person doing the caring.

Carers have the right to ask for an assessment under the Carers and Disabled Children Act 2000. An assessment gives you the chance to make sure that Social Services understands your needs. It is not about judging the way you care for someone.

Many carers find the Emergency Carers Card reassuring. Carrying the card with you means that, if you have an accident or cannot get back to the person you are caring for, for any reason, we can help. If you are interested in knowing more about the Emergency Card contact Vitaline on 01253 477600.

For information and advice about equipment which might help you with your caring role click here to access AskSARA, the Disabled Living Foundations's free, online self assessment tool.
