Child Car Seats

Children are particularly vulnerable when involved in road crashes. Children are not just small adults, they are proportioned differently to adults, their key organs are in different places and their tissues have different strengths and weaknesses compared to adults. This is why children need a specific child restraint system to cope with the different stages of their development. Adult seatbelts are designed for adult bodies and therefore do not protect children in the same way.

In September 2006 new legislation was introduced to further protect children from the damage caused in road crashes.

The new laws state that:

  • Children up to 4'5'' in height or 12 years must use the relevant child car seats or boosters in cars, vans and other goods vehicles.
  • All children under three years old must use the correct child seat when travelling in any car or goods vehicle.
  • Children aged over three years but under 12 years must use the correct child seat/booster cushion when travelling in cars or goods vehicles until they reach 4'5'' (135cms).
The frequently asked questions in this section explain more about how to buy and fit the correct child seat for your child and vehicle.
