Coastline Protection

Blackpool has a marine frontage of about 11.25 Km, all of which is protected from erosion by the sea wall, which needs constant maintenance.

Engineering Services are responsible for the maintenance and improvement of 7 miles of coastal defences. Under the Coastal Protection Act the Council must ensure the stability of the sea walls and ensure their continuing maintenance, for which a detailed Coast Protection Strategy was adopted by the Council in 1995.

Blackpool Council is currently two thirds of the way through a twenty year coastal defence strategy which seeks to rebuild those sections of defence most in need. For example, approximately £12m of works has been completed at South Shore and at Red Bank Road.

A £62m plan is currently under way to transform the promenade between the Sandcastle Centre and North Pier.

Most schemes are planned both in the area between North Pier and South Pier and in the North Shore area.

The new seawall is being built from the Sandcastle to North Pier - 3.2 kms in length.

This is Blackpool's largest ever civil engineering project and will take 4 years to construct working from South to North. Work began in 2005.
