How much does a birth, marriage, civil partnership, stillbirth or death certificate cost?
There is a three tier charge for copy certificates based on whether the certificate is purchased at the time of registration or after registration. When you have read the information below click on
Register Office Fees for a list of our up-to-date Certified Copy Certificate fees
AT TIME OF REGISTRATION Read the criteria below for circumstances that are regarded as being 'at time of registration.' If you purchase certificates at this time, you will be charged for Certified Copy Certificates at time of registration (as detailed in the Register Office Fees price list).
1) When you first register a baby's birth, you will be given a Certified Short birth certificate free of charge, with the option of buying another Certified Short certificate and/or a Certified Standard certificate(s) from the Registrar who registers the event.
Short Certificate - This shows the child's full name, sex, date of birth and district of birth. (It is only offered free of charge when the birth is first registered). Standard or Full Certificate - This shows the child's full birth entry (full name, sex, date of birth, place of birth) and also includes the parent(s) name, occupation and place of birth.
2) When you re-register a child's birth (whether to add the natural father's details or because the natural parents have now married), you can purchase Certified Standard certificates showing the new information from the Registrar who re-registers the event.
3) When you first register a stillbirth, a death, a marriage or a civil partnership, you can purchase Certified Copy Certificates from the Registrar who registers the event.
The certificate fee then rises after the registration appointment.
AFTER TIME OF REGISTRATION BUT STILL HELD BY REGISTRAR Read the criteria below for circumstances that are regarded as being 'after time of registration but still held by Registrar.' If you purchase certificates at this time, you will be charged for Certified Copy Certificates after time of registration but still held by Registrar (as detailed in the Register Office Fees price list).
4) Where you have recently registered a birth, stillbirth, death or marriage, then the original entry may still be held by the Registrar who registered the original event. You can purchase Certified Short birth certificates or Certified Standard certificates of the original event.
5) When you change an original birth record by adding a forename in Space 17, then the original entry may still be held by the Registrar who registered the birth. You can purchase Certified Short birth certificates or Certified Standard certificates showing the new information.
6) When you correct an error on a birth, a stillbirth, a death or a marriage record, the original entry may still be held by the Registrar who registered the event. You can purchase Certified Short birth certificates or Certified Standard certificates showing the new information.
AFTER TIME OF REGISTRATION BUT NOW DEPOSITED Read the criteria below for circumstances that are regarded as being 'after time of registration but now deposited.' If you purchase certificates at this time, you will be charged for Certified Copy Certificates after time of registration but now deposited (as detailed in the Register Office Fees price list).
7) If a birth, death, marriage or civil partnership took place some time ago, then the original entry will now be deposited with the Superintendent Registrar.
8) When you change an original birth record by adding a forename in Space 17, the original entry may no longer be held by the Registrar who registered the birth. However, you can purchase Certified Short birth certificates or Certified Standard certificates showing the new information from the Superintendent Registrar who has custody of the deposited register and who will register the name change.
6) When you correct an error on a birth, a death, a marriage or civil partnership record, the original entry may no longer be held by the Registrar who registered the event. However, you can purchase Certified Short birth certificates or Certified Standard certificates showing the corrected information from the Superintendent Registrar who has custody of the deposited register and who will register the correction.
