How much does a replacement certificate cost?
Birth Certificates There are two types of birth certificate:
1.
Short - This shows the child's full name, sex, date of birth and district of birth. It costs £5.50. *
2.
Standard or Full - This shows the child's full birth entry (full name, sex, date of birth, place of birth) and also includes the parent(s) name, occupation and place of birth. It costs £7. *
If you are applying for a birth certificate in order to obtain your first passport, and you were born after 31st December 1982, then you need to purchase the Standard Certificate at £7.
If you are applying for a birth certificate for genealogy purposes, you should purchase the Standard Certificate at £7 which shows the child's parents and the mother's maiden name.
If you are applying for a birth certificate in order to give notice for a forthcoming marriage or civil partnership (because you do not have a valid passport), then you should purchase the Standard Certificate at £7.
Marriage CertificatesA replacement marriage certificate will cost £7. *
Civil Partnership CertificatesA replacement civil partnership certificate will cost £7 at all times.
Death Certificates A replacement death certificate will cost £7. *

Certificates for a recent event If the birth, marriage or death for which you require a certificate occurred quite recently (say in the last two to three months), then the entry may still be held in a current register. If so, a short birth certificate, standard birth, marriage and death certificate will cost only £3.50. Contact the Register Office in the first instance to confirm the cost before you purchase.
