What is a Liability Order in relation to Council Tax and what happens next?

When a Liability Order has been granted by the Magistrates Court it gives us extra powers to get payment of the money due to us. We can:

  • instruct bailiffs to act on our behalf;
  • start bankruptcy proceedings;
  • attach your earnings;
  • deduct money from your income support, jobseeker's allowance or employment support allowance;
  • ask you about your personal circumstances

The Council prosecutes people who do not comply with the Liability Order granted by the Court.

If you can make a payment now, please use this link to our 'Online Payments' facility.
