Can I get a reduction in Council Tax if I am disabled?
If you, or someone who lives with you is disabled and needs a room to meet their special needs or need to use a wheelchair in the property, you may be entitled to a reduction in your Council Tax.
We can reduce the Council Tax if a physically disabled person needs at least one of the following:
- an extra bathroom or kitchen;
- extra space for a wheelchair if they need to use a wheelchair inside;
- a room that is used mainly to meet their needs.
- You will need to fill in a Disabled Relief Application Form which you can download by using this link or you can contact Customer First for a form. Your income does not affect your claim for a reduction and it does not matter which Council Tax band your property is in.
While you are waiting for a decision on your claim, you must carry on paying your instalment payments on the due dates. If a reduction is granted, a new bill will be sent to you and if you have paid too much, the credit will be refunded. If your circumstances change at any time, you must write and tell us as this may affect the reduction granted.
