Council Tax Exemptions In some cases, Council Tax does not have to be paid for a property because an exemption can be granted. Some exemptions apply to properties where someone lives and some only apply if no-one is living there.

Where someone lives in a property, the types of exemptions available are:

  1. Full time students (you must send us a Council Tax Certificate from your place of study);

  4. A Foreign Diplomat;
  5. Elderly or disabled relatives of a family who live in the main property, in certain annexes and self-contained accommodation;
  6. Members of a visiting force.
Where no-one lives in a property the types of exemptions are:

  1. Newly built properties or where structural alterations or major repairs have taken place (for up to 6 months after completion of work). The maximum period of exemption in these cases is one year;
  2. Owned and last used by a charity (exempt for up to six months);
  3. Not furnished (exempt for up to six months);
  4. Left empty by someone who has moved into a hospital, home or elsewhere to receive care;

  6. Left empty by someone who has moved so they can care for someone else;
