Data Protection Act

Under the provisions of the Data Protection Act 1998, Blackpool Council is registered as a Data Controller and as such, has a duty to look after information held about individuals.

This means the Council must:
  • process your information fairly and lawfully.
  • process your information only for the purposes intended.
  • ensure data is relevant and adequate for the task and not excessive.
  • process your information accurately.
  • ensure it is not kept longer than necessary.
  • process in accordance with your rights.
  • make sure your data is secure.
  • not send it to countries without adequate data protection.
DO YOU WANT TO KNOW WHAT INFORMATION THE COUNCIL HOLDS ABOUT YOU?

In general
You have the right to see what information we hold about you and this is called a subject access request. You can use our subject access request form which you can print and send to us. Alternatively you may write to us or you may use a solicitor or agent to act on your behalf in requesting data but you must give them written authority as proof.

When you make a request you will be asked to supply proof of identity such as a copy of your passport, or your full driving licence, your medical card or birth certificate. You must also provide a copy of a recent utility bill or bank statement with your name and address on.

To assist in providing a speedy response to your request you should indicate any reference numbers or areas of the Council that you think might hold data on you. There is a fee of £10.00 and your cheque or postal order should be made payable to 'Blackpool Council'.

Social Services

Persons wishing to access personal data from Social Services records only, may be exempt a fee. Further information regarding access to your Social Services Records can be sought by contacting the Social Services Customer Care Team.

BOGUS NOTIFICATION LETTERS

Do not be misled. This is advice for Businesses enquiring about Notification. The fee for notification is £35. The Information Commissioner along with the Trading Standards Office are aware of a number of operators causing concern by offering notification services on behalf of the Commissioner and demanding up to £150 to register a business. The Commissioner has a webpage which deals with this problem.
