What can I do if I am experiencing domestic abuse?
You do not have to do anything until you feel ready to do so. You have the right to make decisions in your own time and in your own way. Your options are varied but it is important to get help with all of the following:
- staying with the perpetrator
- staying without the perpetrator
- choosing to leave temporarily
- choosing to leave permanently
If you choose to stay with the perpetrator, it may help to talk to someone you can trust i.e. a neighbour who could call the police if they hear a disturbance at your home.
If you are thinking about leaving, even temporarily, try to take time to think about how to do this safely.
Whichever option you decide to take, it may help to fill in a safety plan but remember to keep this somewhere the perpetrator will not find it.
If you would like to confidentially discuss your options further, please contact the Freephone National 24 Hour Domestic Abuse Helpline (run in partnership between Women’s Aid and Refuge) on 0808 2000 247.
