What is causing my drains to block up?

There are a number of things that may be causing your drains to block up.  In the majority of cases it is due to what has been put down the drain.

One of the most common causes of blockages are foodstuffs such as rice, fats/oils and tea leaves, however, other things such as used washing powder from your washing machines, baby wipes, sanitary towels and nappies can also cause blockages of the private drain/sewer system.

It is therefore, recommended that these last three items are not disposed of in your W.C and other alternative means of disposal used instead.   Private drains/sewers can also become blocked by tree roots or may collapse due to cracks in the pipework causing the ground underneath to ‘wash-away’.  Should this happen, then it is unlikely that you will be able to deal with such defects on your own and you will need some professional help from the Council or other reputable contractors.
