Elections - Voting

There are three types of regular elections that are held in Blackpool:

Local Elections to elect your local ward councillors are held on the first Thursday in May every four years with the last being held on 5th May 2011.  Blackpool is divided into 21 areas or ‘wards’, each having two elected ward councillors.  The next Local Elections in Blackpool will take place on Thursday 5 May 2011.

Parliamentary (General) Elections to vote for your local Member of Parliament (MP). Blackpool is divided into two Parliamentary constituencies – Blackpool North and Fleetwood and Blackpool South, each with one MP. Officially the term of office for an MP is five years, although Parliamentary Elections are often called in the fourth year of office. The last Parliamentary Election was held on 6th May 2010 and the next one will be held on Thursday 7th May 2015.

European Elections – Blackpool is part of the North West of England constituency of the European Parliament. The North West constituency has eight Members of European Parliament (MEPs) with an official term of office of five years. Elections for the European Parliament are held every five years.  The last european elections took place on Thursday 4th June 2009 and the next will be held in June 2014.

A referendum is also a type of election which can be called to ask a specific question on a particular issue.

Verification number of signatories needed on petitions to hold a referendum in 2011 is 5633 signatures.
