Elections - Voting

There are three types of regular elections that are held in Blackpool:

Local Elections
to elect your local ward councillors are held on the first Thursday in May every four years with the last being held on 3rd May 2007. Blackpool is divided into 21 areas or ‘wards’, each having two elected ward councillors.

Parliamentary (General) Elections
to vote for your local Member of Parliament (MP). Blackpool is divided into two Parliamentary constituencies – Blackpool North and Fleetwood and Blackpool South, each with one MP. Officially the term of office for an MP is five years, although Parliamentary Elections are often called in the fourth year of office. The last Parliamentary Election was held on 5th May 2005 and the next one will be held on Thursday 6th May 2010.

Please note that all the next Parliamentary General Election the wards of:

Anchorsholme                      Layton                                Claremont
Norbreck                                Greenlands                       Park
Ingthorpe                                Warbreck                           Bispham

Together with the Wyre Borough Council wards of Bourne, Cleveleys Park, Jubilee and Victoria will form the new Parliamentary Constituency of Blackpool North and Cleveleys.

The remaining twelve wards of Blackpool:

Bloomfield                            Highfield                        Talbot
Brunswick                             Marton                            Tyldesley
Clifton                                    Squires Gate                 Victoria
Hawes Side                         Stanley                            Waterloo

will form the Parliamentary Constituency of Blackpool South.

European Elections – Blackpool is part of the North West of England constituency of the European Parliament. The North West constituency has eight Members of European Parliament (MEPs) with an official term of office of five years. Elections for the European Parliament are held every five years and the last elections took place on Thursday 4th June 2009.

A referendum is also a type of election which can be called to ask a specific question on a particular issue.
