Fostering

Fostering
Be a Superstar…

            …Be a Foster Carer

Fostering is caring for children or young people in your own home while their own parents are unable to look after them. Local Authorities have a responsibility to look after children in their area who are in need and foster care is a good way of meeting children’s needs. When children live with foster families their parents still have responsibilities for them and will expect to be very involved.

Why do we need Foster Carers?

There are many different reasons why children need foster care, usually because of a family crisis or problem, which means that it would be better for the child to be looked after by Foster Carers.

Foster Care can be one way of giving everyone an opportunity to work together to try and overcome difficulties and enable children to return home to their families.

Some children may have been physically harmed, neglected or sexually abused. Other children may have witnessed domestic violence or experienced neglect due to chaotic drug or alcohol misuse. Some parents may be experiencing severe physical or mental illness and may not be able to care for their children until they recover.

The best place for most children to live is with their families. Some children live with their foster families for a short time, while others may need a permanent foster family to live with until they grow up. Some children’s needs are best met through permanent adoptive families.

Coming into Foster Care and being separated from their families is extremely traumatic for children and young people and they may not fully understand the reasons for what is happening. Foster Carers are instrumental in supporting children through this very difficult time.
