Garden Maintenance

The Tidy Garden Scheme helps older people continue to use their gardens and improve safety and security. One of the most commonly quoted reasons for people moving into residential care is that they cannot manage their gardens any longer.

Research by Help the Aged has shown that bogus callers (people who may try to cheat and steal from you by calling at the door and claiming to be someone they are not) are more likely to target a property that has an overgrown or unkempt garden. This is because it may reveal that the occupier is a vulnerable person.

Who can get help?

Anyone over the age of 60, or a disabled person under the age of 60, who is getting a means-tested benefit and Disability Living Allowance (see ‘What is a means-tested benefit?’)

What will it cost?

The initial visit, which includes an hour’s work, will cost £25.00 including VAT, which includes cleaning up and taking away any rubbish. The gardener will give you a quote for any further work you may need.

What work can we do?

We will cut the grass, trim shrubs, tidy up and remove any rubbish. The gardener will talk to you about any other work you may need doing, and the possibility of turning your garden into a low maintenance space.

For any larger garden maintenance, our gardener will be pleased to discuss your options and the costs with you.

What is a means-tested benefit?

The following are means-tested benefits:

  • Income Support
  • Council Tax Benefit
  • Pension Credit Guarantee
  • Housing Benefit (if you are renting your home privately
