How do I search and apply for birth, marriage and death certificates from Blackpool Register Office?

SEARCHING

Online Indexes

Many of Lancashire’s Register Office records are currently being indexed by local family history societies. Lancashire Family History & Heraldry Society has kindly undertaken the task of indexing Blackpool’s records.

You can search the online indexes here at Lancashire BMD. A resulting match will indicate which Register Office holds the record.

Where to find the record if you have found a General Register Office (GRO) reference for Fylde or Blackpool

District of Fylde

Blackpool was originally a sub-district of the Fylde Registration District. Fylde existed from 1st July 1837 to 30th September 1936.

Its other sub-districts were Blackpool North, Blackpool South, Fleetwood, Kirkham, Lytham, Lytham St. Annes and Poulton-le-Fylde. Those registers are now divided between the Blackpool and Lancashire Registration Districts.

Fylde is referenced in the GRO indexes* as Volumes XXI (1837-51); 8e (1852-1946) and 10C (1946-74), so if you have found a GRO reference for Fylde in one of the years above, then the record you require could be held at either Blackpool Register Office or Lancashire Registration District’s Certificate Service.

District of Blackpool
Blackpool Registration District was created on 1st October 1936 and included the sub-districts Blackpool, Blackpool East, Blackpool North and Blackpool South.

Blackpool is referenced in the GRO indexes* as 8e (1936-46) and 10B (1946-74). 8e merges with the Fylde GRO reference, therefore the record you require could be held at either Blackpool Register Office or Lancashire Registration District’s Certificate Service.

Any 10B GRO references should indicate that the record is held at Blackpool Register Office.

* Remember though that the GRO reference is relatively useless for locating a record at a local Register Office.

If you are unsure where the event took place, you should write to or telephone Blackpool Register Office for clarification before you purchase. The contact details are on the right.
