How to recycle batteries

Blackpool Council aims to encourage the recycling of used household batteries. In the UK we currently throw away over 600 million batteries every year and only 2% of these batteries are being recycled! Blackpool has special dedicated sites where you can recycle your batteries, therefore reducing the amount sent to landfill.
All Blackpool libraries and the main council buildings have been supplied with a container for used batteries.
Libraries which have a container for used batteries include:
Central
Boundary
Layton
Mereside
Palatine
Revoe
Anchorsholme
Bispham
Primary schools have also been getting involved in the drive to reduce batteries entering the waste stream...
Blackpool Council introduced a battery recycling scheme for primary schools in 2007. The scheme is available to all Blackpool primary schools on request. As this is a county-wide campaign we are encouraging all schools to get involved and make a real difference to Lancashire's drive to reduce waste going to landfill and making the county a greener place to live!
Primary schools interested in the scheme can contact Blackpool Council's Customer First team for more information on 01253 477477.
How to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle household batteries:
- Use the mains power where possible
- Choose appliances that can use power derived from the sun via solar panels or from a winding mechanism, e.g. radios with windup chargers.
- Use rechargeable batteries and a battery charger. This saves energy because the energy needed to manufacture a battery is on average 50 times greater than the energy it gives out!!!
- Recycle your household batteries at a Household Waste Recycling Centre or at other specified locations.
- Seek guidance on how to recycle or dispose batteries from the distributor who originally supplied the battery, the battery manufacturer or the appliance manufacturer.
