Your recycling questions

Your recycling questionsA multi-million pound, state-of-the-art waste recovery park opened in Thornton in 2010, and this is allowing us to treat waste in a more sustainable and environmentally friendly way. The facility will dramatically reduce the amount of waste being sent to landfill and maximise the amount of kitchen and garden waste that can be turned into a high quality compost. As well as benefiting the environment, this will help Blackpool and Lancashire meet demanding recycling targets set by Government. The sophisticated waste processing machinery that makes this possible means a slight change is necessary in the way waste is collected will be necessary.

Why does cardboard have to come out of green bins?
Cardboard can cause problems with the screening and composting process so to ensure that we are able to produce high quality compost, it is essential that we take it out of the green lidded bins.

Where do I present my new brown sack?

Please present your brown sack on your recycling collection at your designated presentation point with your green/blue lidded recycling bins.

What if there is no room in my brown sack for all the extra cardboard?
Anyone who requests an additional brown sack can call the Customer First line on 477477 and an additional sack will be delivered. Alternatively additional cardboard that will not fit in the brown sack can be placed at the side of the brown sack for collection.

Will there be any change to dry recyclables (glass, cans and plastics)?
There is no change to the way you recycle items in your blue lidded bin.

Will my collection day change?
There will be no changes to collection days.

Are other councils making these changes?
Other authorities will also be running their waste into the new waste recovery park at Thornton in due course. Each council will make its own arrangements and will notify its residents in the most appropriate way.

Where will the cardboard and paper go to?

Cardboard and paper will be recycled through a waste treatment process.

Can I get a replacement brown sack if mine is lost or stolen?
Yes, if the sack is lost or stolen please contact Customer First on 477477 and a replacement sack will be delivered on your next recycling collection.

Can I have my green bin collected as I only use this for cardboard?

Blackpool Council would advise you to keep your green bin for when food waste collections are introduced in the future.

Can I have a smaller green bin?
Blackpool Council only has a minimal stock of 140L green bins and these are issued in exceptional circumstances.
