Housing and Council Tax Benefit Claims

You can claim Housing and/ or Council Tax Benefit if you:

  • pay rent to a private landlord, Housing Association or for a Council property
  • pay Council Tax on your home
  • have savings of less than £16,000. If you are over 60, you may be able to have more than £16,000 in savings.  If you would like further details about this, please use this link to view information from the Pension Service
  • are on a low income, for example you work full time, part time or are self-employed and get a low wage or you get any state benefit.
Not everyone shown on the above list can claim both Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit. If you are unsure whether you will be entitled or not visit us at the Customer First Centre or telephone the Revenues and Benefits Line on 01253 478847 for some advice.

If you are a Private Tenant the amount of benefit you receive will be based on the Local Housing Allowance Rate you are entitled to.

Please use this link to view  the Local Housing Allowance Rates from April 2009 onwards.

Please remember if your Local Housing Allowance rate is more than your rent, the maximum amount of benefit you can get is your rent plus £15.

To view LHA rates prior to April 2009 please use this link.

If you would like a basic idea of how much benefit you are likely to receive please use this link to view our Benefit Calculator

Please note the figures produced by the on line calculator are only estimated. You will be notified of your actual award when your claim has been processed.

If you would like more information, please view our leaflet "Housing & Council Tax Benefit-How to claim".
