Woodlands from Waste

Woodlands from Waste, is an innovative partnership between
Global Renewables, Lancashire County Council and Blackpool Council, with active professional support from the
Forestry Commission, to develop woodlands for Lancashire.
Over the 25 years of the waste PFI contract 2,500 000 trees will be planted and maintained. This will lead to the creation of 1,000 hectares of new native woodland in Lancashire’s diverse landscape.
Project Vision The Woodlands from Waste project aims to use the resources generated by the county’s waste and use it to establish new areas of woodland.
* To increase woodland cover in the County. Target: The creation of an additional 1,200 hectares of woodland cover by 2032. To establish 100k trees per year.
* To regenerate and remediate marginal and Brownfield land Target: Minimum 10 ha of sites per year on derelict, neglected and other marginal land.
* To offset CO2 Emissions from Lancashire’s Waste Network. Target: An average saving of 16k tonnes of CO2 per year by 2020
* To recover the maximum resource from municipal waste Target: To recover value from 100% of the organic component of Lancashire’s waste by 2015
Woodlands from Waste will lead to an increase in Lancashire's woodland coverage by close to 10% of current levels. These trees will provide residents and visitors with access to all of the benefits associated with social forestry: health and well-being, recreation, landscape enhancement and increased biodiversity, a valuable asset for all to enjoy for generations to come.
