Learn at your Library Whatever your age or interests your local library is a fantastic place for you to visit to learn and discover. You can use your library as a base to study using the wide range of materials and resources, both in-house and on-line, which are available free to library customers. Your study can be self-directed or as an adult customer if you want to undertake a formal course of learning, whether it be for the purpose of further study, for job related qualifications or simply leisure, then library staff will endeavour to recommend suitable learning opportunities for you.
Some courses run by the Council`s Adult and Community Learning Department are actually held at library venues. These can range from introductory “taster” sessions on ICT and the Internet to “Yoga for Stress Relief and Confidence building”. Just contact your local library for further details of which courses are currently available. Whatever course you choose you can use the excellent facilities available at your local community library which include; helpful and approachable library staff who will help you locate resources or information, free Internet access and use of MS Office software including Word, and the use of printing and photocopying services (for which there is a small charge per A4 sheet / printout). Skills for Life Equally Libraries can offer friendly and confidential referral advice into suitable learning opportunities to adults who wish to “brush up” on their skills in reading, writing and maths. Revoe library – located off Central Drive – telephone 01253 478160- is specialising in this type of advice, and the library staff team there would welcome any enquiries. If you think you may benefit from “brushing up” your skills or know someone who may please do not hesitate to call in or phone.
Additionally Revoe, Layton, Palatine and Central Libraries all have special collections of books aimed at the adult reader who wishes to improve their reading skills. Please ask for the “First Choice” collection. These books can to borrowed from library. ESOL (English for Speakers of other Languages) Similarly if English is not your first language and you wish to improve your written and spoken skills, library staff will be able to recommend suitable local training opportunities.
