What lotteries are exempt?
Small lotteries and private lotteries do not need to be registered. There are various conditions that need to be filled in order to constitute such lotteries:
Small lottery -
- The lottery must not be the only inducement to persons attending the entertainment.
- Entertainments at which lotteries may be promoted are: sales at work, fetes, dinner dances or sporting or athletic events.
- The proceeds must not be for private gain and no prize may be a money prize. The fee paid for the prize and expenses can be recovered out of the gains.
- No more than £250 in prizes.
Private lottery -
- The sale of tickets is confined to members of the same society or persons all of whom work or reside on the same premises. If a lottery takes place in a hospital, tickets can be sold to staff and patients but not visitors.
- After deducting costs for printing and stationery, the proceeds must be used to provide prizes.
- In the case of a society the proceeds can go to the society or the provision of prizes or both.
- The price of every ticket must be the same.
- No written notice allowed unless on either premises where the lottery takes place, for example a place of work or residence etc.
