What information will I need to supply when I register a stillbirth?
You will need to provide the registrar with the following two types of information:
1. Documentary evidence of the stillbirth When a child is stillborn (born after 24 weeks but without showing any sign of life) the doctor or midwife who was present at the stillbirth or who examined the body will issue a Medical Certificate of Stillbirth. The person who registers the stillbirth must take this certificate with them to the Register Office or to the Registrar at Victoria Hospital.
2. The child and parents' personal information.
- first name(s) of the child (if chosen) and surname
- date and place of stillbirth
- sex of the child
- father's first name(s) and surname (where this information is to be entered in the register)
- father's date and place of birth
- father's current or last occupation
- father's usual address
- mother's first name(s) and surname
- mother's date and place of birth
- mother's maiden surname if the mother is, or has been married
- mother's current or last occupation
- mother's usual address
- date of marriage, if married to the child's father
- number of previous children by present husband and by any former husband
It is most important that the information recorded in the stillbirth register is correct. If any mistake is made, for example in the spelling of a name or surname or in the description of the parents’ occupations or places of birth, it will give the parents or other person who registered the stillbirth some trouble to have it put right.
The person registering the stillbirth should check the information recorded in the register very carefully before the entry is signed. For more information on correcting a stillbirth certificate please contact the Register Office using the methods on the right.
