Be Safe Be Seen

The Travel and Road Safety team promote an annual Be Safe Be Seen campaign each winter.
When the clocks go back in October the changes mean brighter mornings but unfortunately also darker evenings. This makes it more difficult for children to be noticed and stay safe on the way home from school.
In Britain last year 33 children were killed in pedestrian accidents during the darker months (Nov- March) and 854 were seriously injured.
Parents should ensure their children can be easily seen, especially at night, on dark days and in bad weather and set a good example by being bright and visible themselves.
- Bright and fluorescent clothes show up best by day, especially in dull or misty weather.
- By night reflective materials work best because they show up in car headlights.
- Fluorescent clothing does not work after dark.
- Reflective stickers can be put on clothing, school bags and equipment to make being safe more fun for children.
However, being seen when out and about is important for all road users, not just children.
As the days become shorter, pedestrians and cyclists in particular are more vulnerable as they are less visible to motorists.
Cyclists are reminded that it is illegal to cycle at night without a white front light, a red back light and a red reflector at the back.
Pedestrians should choose well-lit routes and cross at well- lit places.
Drivers should also make sure windows, mirrors and lights are clear to make sure
they can see and be seen and should take extra care in the dark and bad weather.
During this time of year LED Reflective Armbands and Silicone Bike Light sets are sold at various Council receptions.
