Nationally over 3000 people die on the roads every year and one person is injured every 20 minutes.
In 2010 four people died and another 497 were injured on Blackpool’s roads.
But for every one person killed or injured there can be dozens more affected. Road crashes don’t just kill people but cause trauma and grief to those friends and family left behind.
Everybody needs to travel and it is important that they do so safely. The Council’s Travel and Road Safety team spreads the safe travel message, providing advice and training for all.
Blackpool Council’s Travel and Road Safety team are committed to reducing the number of people killed and injured on Blackpool’s roads.
In partnership with the wider community, including the police, fire and ambulance and the Primary Care Trust, the team target all road users to address road safety issues through a combination of engineering, education, encouragement and enforcement. Our work includes:
- Visiting schools and colleges to educate children about road safety
- Working with the police to educate road users and enforce laws
- Implementing slower speed limits around schools and other suitable roads
- Encouraging safer behaviour on the roads through campaigns such as Blackpool is 30 or less.
- Offering training courses for cyclists, pedestrians and drivers.
The team also promote the Vision Zero campaign, which aims to reduce the number of deaths on Blackpool’s roads to zero. Blackpool’s vision is of no more lives lost on our roads.
As you will see on these road safety pages, work continues to make Blackpool’s roads safer and to encourage those that use them to become safer and more responsible on the roads too.
