Safer Winter Driving

Safer Winter Driving Be prepared for harsh driving conditions this winter

Top 10 Tips for Safer Winter Driving!

1. See and be seen - don't wait until it is fully dark to turn your lights on

2. Remember that speed limits are not targets and more hours of darkness may require slower speeds

3. Look out for pedestrians and cyclists wearing dark clothing

4. Check your windscreen wiper blades are in good condition and screen wash is topped up

5. Keep a pair of sunglasses handy for low winter sun

6. Check your lights and tyres, carry a spare tyre and set of bulbs

7. Use fog lights if visibility is seriously reduced

8. Clear your windows, lights and mirrors before you set off. Have an ice-scraper and some de-icer handy

9. In snow and ice use the highest gear possible, if you start to skid ease off the accelerator. Do not brake suddenly

10. In snow and icy conditions, keep to the main roads as these are more likely to have been gritted.

The Travel & Road Safety Team sell LED Reflective armbands and bike lights to help make the vulnerable road users more visible to drivers. FREE ice scrapers are available, to claim yours please contact the team on 01253 476107 or roadsafety@blackpool.gov.uk (quoting ref: cw001).
