The provision of a street cleansing service is a statutory requirement.
The statutory requirements relate to the cleansing of the borough's public highways to meet statutory standards of cleanliness under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 Code of Practice on Litter and Refuse (revised in July 1990).
The Act determines national standards of cleanliness to be achieved by the Local Authority on all adopted streets, roads, passageways, thoroughfares, footpaths, beaches and public areas within the Borough.
The Street Cleansing Section deal with the removal of:
- Fallen leaves and blossom
- Wind blown sand
- Dead animals
- Oil and paint
- Road traffic debris
- Storm debris
All residential streets are regularly inspected and swept as and when required.
The beach is cleaned every day from May to October.
