School Attendance and Truancy

School Attendance and Truancy The Pupil Welfare Service supports children, young people and their families of compulsory school age in:

  • improving school attendance
  • licensing for employment and child entertainment
  • child protection.
We also have information on our site about Children in Employment

If your child refuses to go to school or you find out that your child has been playing truant you need to contact the school at once.

Make an appointment to talk about the situation with a teacher or the headteacher. If problems continue you can make an appointment to see a Pupil Welfare Officer.

The headteacher can help you with this or you can telephone us for advice and support.

Pupil Welfare Officers work in partnership with the Police. Under the Crime and Disorder Act, it is our job to lower levels of absenteeism from school and to protect young children.

If there are children living near you who are causing a nuisance and should be attending school, please contact Blackpool Central Police Station on 01253 293933 or you can get in touch with your nearest local police station to report the problem.

You can also report concerns about children or young people using our online reporting service or by using our freephone truancy hotline. Call 0800 073 1799 or visit www.rubothered.co.uk/truancy to make a report now.

The school year starts on 1st September of one year and ends on 31st August of the following year.  Your child can leave school on the last Friday in June in the school year in which they are 16 years old.
