School - Exclusion of Pupils

If your child has been excluded from school it can be a very worrying and upsetting time.

The Head Teacher has the power to exclude a pupil from school.  An exclusion can last for up to 45 days in a school year or permanently.

A Head Teacher has responsibility for pupils on their way to and from school, and therefore has authority over them, even when outside school premises so a pupil can be excluded for behaviour outside school.

There are three types of exclusion:
  • a fixed term exclusion, which is for a number of school days.
  • a lunchtime exclusion
  • a permanent exclusion
The school will tell you that your child is being excluded, usually by telephone.

A letter from the Head Teacher will follow this, usually within one school day.
The letter will tell you:
  • the reason for the exclusion
  • the number of days of the exclusion, or that it is a permanent exclusion
  • the date and time of return to school (if it is a fixed term exclusion)
  • how you can collect and return school work for your child during the exclusion
  • who you can contact for advice
A Head Teacher’s decision to exclude a pupil has to be confirmed by the school governors if over 15 days in any one school term and especially if it is a decision to permanently exclude. This takes place at a meeting of the Governors’ Discipline Committee. They will meet if the pupil will miss more than 15 days in any one term, or will miss a public exam, such as GCSE.
