School Sport Partnership

School Sport Partnership The School Sport Partnership is a nationwide scheme which has seen the creation of 450 school sport partnerships whose job is to enhance and increase sports opportunities for all.

These partnerships are increasing the amount of time pupils spend on high quality PE and sports activities. The profile and recognised value of PE and school sport has seen an improvement with pupils having access to a wider range of opportunities.

In addition, the provision of extra-curricular opportunities has increased and teachers are benefiting from a greater range of training opportunities.
The national target for School Sport Partnerships is to increase the percentage of 5 to 6 year olds who spend a minimum of 2 hours per week on high quality PE and school sport, within and beyond the school curriculum to 85% by 2008 and, to at least 75% in each School Sport Partnership by 2008.

High quality links between schools and clubs enable young people to:

  • make the most of their experiences in both settings
  • feel comfortable in a club setting and, as a result, be more likely to continue participating once they leave school
  • try out new sports
Young people benefit from seeing the connection between different opportunities to learn. Schools and clubs that work together closely and make the most of what young people learn in each setting provide the best opportunities for young people to make progress and achieve.
