Safer School Transport Advice for Children

We want you to enjoy your journey to and from school an dif you follow these simple rules, everyone can travel in safety.

  • If you need a bus pass, make sure you have this with you.
  • Wait safely for the bus, well back from the edge of the road.
  • Wait until the bus stops before getting on or off.
  • Never push others on or near a moving bus.
  • Do not attempt to open or close the bus doors.
  • Take care that your coat, scarf, bag or rucksack does not get caught in the bus door.
  • Only ride on your correct school bus or car.
  • Do not go back to the bus after you get off.
  • Do not leave litter on the bus. Take it home with you.
  • You are not allowed to smoke on school buses.
  • Never accept a lift from anyone else. If somebody stops and offers you a lift tell your schoolteacher or parent.
  • When you are walking to or from the place where the school transport picks you up or lets you off, follow the Green Cross Code.
  • Do not cross the road close behind or in front of a bus. Wait until the bus has gone and walk to a place where you can see any traffic clearly.
  • Think about the safety of others. When you are on the bus, stay in your seat all the time that the bus is moving.
  • Where a seat belt is fitted make sure this stays fastened at all times between the beginning and end of the journey.
  • Do not distract the driver by being too noisy. Listen and carry out any instructions the driver may give.
  • Badly behaved pupils can cause the driver to have an accident. You could be banned from using school transport if you misbehave.
  • Do not damage a vehicle in any way - you or your parents will be required to pay for any repairs if you deliberately cause damage. We have CCTV cameras on all school buses.
  • Older pupils should set a good example for younger pupils both on and off the bus.
  • If you have bulky items, for example large musical instruments or project work, ask the driver if he or she can safely store them during the journey.
  • If the bus breaks down, stay with the vehicle and wait for another bus to arrive.
