Special Support Assistants

There are approximately 130 centrally funded Special Support Assistants (SSAs) who support pupils with Statements of Educational Need in mainstream schools.

The pupils have statements for either: Complex Learning Difficulties Severe Difficulties Hearing Impairment Physical Difficulties Support is given to enable the pupil to: be able to access lessons encourage and build up confidence help foster peer acceptance help the pupil develop his/her potential Training in all areas of Special Needs is available to SSAs in order to develop skills and knowledge in particular areas of Special Educational Needs (SEN).

Because they are part of a central team, SSAs can be deployed into any of the mainstream schools in Blackpool. They work collaboratively with school staff, as well as receiving advice and support from a SEN Advisory Teacher. The ages of children supported can be from Nursery to Year 11.
