Voluntary Roles

Sitting Service

Blackpool Sitting Service supports those who care for an older person or adult with physical disability or chronic illness by providing short breaks.

Volunteers spend time with people who would be at risk if left on their own at home, enabling their carer to have 2-3 hours of free time.  Volunteers are able to make light snacks or participate in activities with the person they sit with.

For more information, please contact Anne Gregson, Voluntary Services Officer.  Telephone 01253 476885.  You can email anne.gregson@blackpool.gov.uk or you can write to Anne at the Voluntary Services Team, Children, Adult and Family Services, Blackpool Centre for Independent Living, 259 Whitegate Drive, Blackpool FY3 9JL.

Carers Information Boards

There are 100 notice boards in public buildings including medical centres, hospitals, churches and libraries to display information for carers.  Our volunteers update the boards every 6-8 weeks with different themes, including local services, support groups or information related to health.

If you would like more information, please contact Anne Gregson as above.

Out and About Scheme

This has been developed as an extension of the Sitting Service and will enable volunteers (where appropriate), to take people out to participate in activities in the community.  At the same time their carers will have a short break.  This service is to meet the needs of carers of adults with a learning disability.

For more information, please contact Diane Burton, Voluntary Services Officer.  Telephone 01253 476884.  You can email diane.burton@blackpool.gov.uk or you can write to Diane at the Voluntary Services Team, Children, Adult and Family Services, Blackpool Centre for Independent Living, 259 Whitegate Drive, Blackpool FY3 9JL.

Attendant Scheme

To assist the bus drivers to transport older people to and from a Blackpool day centre.  The driver collects the client and the escort would be expected to stay in the bus to make sure the other passengers stay in their seats and stop members of the public from entering the bus.  Duties also include making sure all passengers are wearing their seatbelts.

For more information, please contact Lesley McShane, Voluntary Services Officer.  Telephone 01253 476885.  You can email lesley.mcshane@blackpool.gov.uk or you can write to Lesley at the Voluntary Services Team, Children, Adult and Family Services, Blackpool Centre for Independent Living, 259 Whitegate Drive, Blackpool FY3 9JL.

Volunteer Drivers Scheme

This role is to help support carers in Blackpool.  Our drivers transport other volunteers or carers to pre-arranged meetings or social activities to enable them to take part when public transport is not practical.
For more information, please contact Anne Gregson.   Contact details are the same as for the Sitting Service at the top of this page.
