Zoo and Aquaria Licences

Zoos and Aquaria are both licensed under The Zoo Licensing Act 1981.

The inspection regime is regulated by the Secretary of State's Standards of Modern Zoo Practice and overseen by the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA ).

A licence has a life of 6 years. Within that period there have to be informal and periodic inspections. This amounts to an annual inspection: one year involving vets appointed by the Local Authority and the Zoo together with Health and Safety Officers, the next year by two vets appointed by DEFRA plus one by the Local Authority and the Zoo plus Health and Safety. This ensures fairness and impartiality.

Stock lists have to be accurate, every aspect of husbandry is scrutinised and particular emphasis is placed on the educational value of the displays. Fees are calculated on the time spent conducting the inspections and the expenses of the personnel involved.
