Flying the Flag for LGBT History Month

Blackpool Council has marked the start of a special month by flying rainbow flags from the top of the resort’s famous Tower and its Town Hall.

The rainbow flag - a universal symbol of LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans’ equality) – will be flown throughout the month of February to mark LGBT History Month.

Councillor Sarah Riding, Blackpool Council’s Cabinet Member for Equality and Diversity, said: ‘ We’re flying the flag as a symbol of our solidarity with and support for the LGBT community and to honour the struggle many courageous people from these communities have faced to gain equality. The month is also an opportunity to learn more about the ongoing challenges LGB and T people face in the struggle for equality.”

February 1 also saw a display of rainbow coloured lights decorating the top of the Tower.

A special exhibition and DVD will be shown in the Council’s Customer First centre on Corporation Street throughout LGBT History Month. This has been arranged by the town’s LGBT Forum.

Blackpool Council’s Student Support Team has written a resource for adults and staff who work with young people. This outlines the issues faced by young LGBT people. Further information about this and young people’s group OK2B is available from Amanda Heyes on 01253 476524.

Two LGBT films will be shown at Blackpool Central Library on Wednesday February 15 and Wednesday February 29 at 6pm. Refreshments will be provided by the local branch of the Richmond Fellowship.
