Green flags fly proudly
Green flags now flutter proudly in the breeze in Blackpool after the town ran them up the flagpoles at its three award-winning parks.

This year, the newly restored Stanley Park adds to the list as yet another Green Flag location in the town, alongside Watson Road Park and Louie Horrocks Park.

With over 390 acres, Blackpool’s Stanley Park is a masterpiece of landscape design and historical splendour.
Its unique design, beautiful gardens and wide range of facilities have enabled it to become one of the largest municipal parks in the UK to win this prestigious award.

Cllr Tony Williams, Cabinet Member for Culture and Communities, said: “Being the largest municipal park in Lancashire to have won the award is a fantastic achievement and I would like to thank everyone involved.
“As the judges are very thorough, it is understandably harder for such a large park to improve every small detail, but the hard work of everyone involved has meant we have been able to claim a much coveted Green Flag Award.
“It can only reinforce the Council’s commitment to making Blackpool greener and I’m sure it will attract many more visitors to the park. It is a lovely place to visit and has a fantastic community spirit that is obvious to anyone”.

The Green Flag Award recognises standards of excellence within green parks and spaces and is assessed by a number of criteria. Judges assessed the park for outstanding quality in a number of key areas including, a healthy, safe and secure environment, it must be welcoming to visitors, it must be well maintained and clean, attention should be paid to conservation and heritage, community involvement should be apparent and marketing and management strategies must be in place.

Funding to improve the park has come from £5 Million Heritage Lottery grant, which has been spent on restoring the park to its former glory.
The improvements included restoration of the parks horticultural set pieces, such as the Italian Gardens, Rose Gardens, Harbour Terrace and Gardens of Remembrance as well as general modifications to paths, drains, fences and infrastructure.
All of the parks key buildings have been restored, including art deco Café and surrounding car park and terraces, the Tennis Court Pavilion, Conservatories and various kiosks throughout the park. Stanley Park Lake has also been restored and a significant amount of the Tree Management Plan has been carried out.
