Further 24 Blackpool roads set to receive major upgrades

Blackpool Council adds further 24 residential roads to its resurfacing programme, including Devonshire Road - with 15 roads set to be completed before the summer holidays.

Newly resurfaced road with housing

This is part of a significant £6m investment in Blackpool’s roads, focused on improving the streets people use every day to park by their homes, get to work, visit shops and appointments, and support family life.

Blackpool Council’s road maintenance budget has increased by £6m this year, targeted at resurfacing and restoring key routes, extending the life of Blackpool’s roads for years to come.

Since February, 21 residential roads across the town have already been resurfaced, covering more than 44,000 square metres of road. These improvements are making everyday journeys smoother, safer and greener for residents, businesses and visitors.

Works planned include Devonshire Road, between Mansfield Road and Warbreck Hill and between Talbot Road and George Street – busy local routes used daily by residents, families and businesses. Over time, sections of the road have deteriorated, resulting in an uneven surface.

These works, starting 26 May, will involve targeted reconstruction and resurfacing to repair sections of the road that have deteriorated. Patching focuses on specific areas of damage rather than resurfacing the full length of the road. By resurfacing areas of the road that need it most, it reduces disruption, improves day-to-day travel and helps the road last longer.

To allow the works to be carried out safely and efficiently, temporary traffic signals will be in place along sections of Devonshire Road for the duration of the works. From Monday 8 June, phased road closures will take place over three days between 9am and 4pm to reduce disruption.

“Improving Blackpool’s roads is a top priority for us, because we know how much local streets matter to the people who live on them and use them every day. These are the roads where children walk to school, neighbours meet, residents park near their homes, and small businesses operate. “For many years, we have carried out preventative maintenance and focused on major commuting routes, but this programme reflects our determination to go further and address the condition of residential streets as well. By investing now, we’re repairing damage, strengthening road surfaces and preventing more serious issues from developing in the future saving disruption over the long term. “This is part of an intensive and ambitious programme to improve some of Blackpool’s most challenging roads and restore them to the standard our communities rightly expect. We understand there will be some short‑term inconvenience while works are carried out, and we thank residents for their patience. That temporary disruption will deliver lasting improvements, helping to create safer, smoother and more pleasant streets for everyone across Blackpool.”
