Adverse weather and health plan

The heatwave and cold weather plans for England and have now been replaced by a single adverse weather and health plan. This plan, produced by the United Kingdom Health Secuirty Agency (UKHSA) is an ambitious plan which seeks to support local and national organisations to prepare, build and respond to future adverse weather events to protect lives and promote health and wellbeing in order to:

  • Prevent the increase in years of life lost due to adverse weather events
  • Prevent mortality due to adverse weather events
  • Prevent morbidity due to adverse weather events
  • Reduce the use of healthcare services due to adverse weather events

To support the plan, resources available include an 'easy read' version along with guidance, advice and a number of suporting resources.

The plan is supported by a Weather health alerting system which is provided by the UKHSA in partnership with the Met Office. Weather health alerts, which are impact based, provide early warning to the health and social care sector, the responder community, the voluntary and community sector and government departments when adverse temperatures are likely to impact on the health and wellbeing of the population. The weather health alerting system is made up of Heat-Health Alerts (HHA) and Cold-Health Alerts (CHA).
