  • Every property in England is assigned a valuation band based on the price a property could have been expected to have been sold for in 1991. The Valuation Office Agency (VOA) compiles and maintains a list of valuation bands and sends this information to the local Council for charging council tax. The VOA is a central government service and part of HMRC.
  • The band for your property is shown on the front of your bill but if you think your property is in the wrong band then you should report this to the VOA; Challenge your council tax band on GOV.UK.
  • You can ask the VOA to review your council tax band if you think it's wrong and you have been the taxpayer for less than six months, or if your band has changed in the last six months. Even if neither of these apply, you can still ask for a review. But you’ll need to give strong evidence to show why you believe your property is in the wrong band.
  • The VOA made a video to explain what evidence they'll need from you. Watch it on their YouTube channel: Council Tax - What is a comparable property? (YouTube video).
  • Financial information relating to the setting of the Blackpool Council Tax precept can be found on our finances site.
  • The amount of Council Tax you pay includes an additional amount for the Police and Crime Commissioner for Lancashire and the Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service.
