Wraparound childcare for primary puplis

For parents who need before of after school childcare for primary age pupils

The government has committed funding to support an increase in wraparound childcare for parents and carers of primary school-aged children. Many schools and other settings will begin expanding or creating new wraparound places from September 2024 onwards.

Settings that provide before and after school care

Both breakfast and afterschool clubs can take place at your child’s school, at another nearby school, or at another local venue such as a nursery or childminder. You may be required to collect your child or children from another afterschool club venue at the end of the day, this is because some schools will be working with one another and other providers to run wraparound in collaboration.

You can find more information about your local wraparound offer through your child's school or by searching our directory.

What is wraparound childcare?

Wraparound childcare is before and after school childcare that wraps around the school day. It typically runs from 8.00am until 6.00pm (hours can change depending on local demand) during term time, either on a school site, or another local setting such as a community centre, a nursery, or a childminder.

Paying for before or after school care?

You will be required to pay for before and after-school childcare.

Costs will vary and are set by the school or the provider. In Blackpool, our ambition is that schools and providers keep costs affordable for families.

Your child’s school or other settings will be able to provide you with a breakdown of their costs.

Tax free childcare

If you get tax-free childcare, you’ll set up an online childcare account for your child. For every £8 you pay into this account, the government will pay in £2 to use to pay your provider.

Universal Credit childcare costs

If you pay for childcare while you go to work, Universal Credit can pay some of your childcare costs.

This includes holiday clubs, after-school clubs and breakfast clubs. If you live with a partner, you both need to be working, unless your partner cannot look after your children.

School provision of before and after school childcare?

Schools do not have to provide before or after school care.

Some schools will be working together with nearby schools or other settings to provide wraparound as a cluster (group of schools working together). This supports schools that do not have sufficient demand to run provision alone, reduces costs, and enables children to interact more widely with their peers.

If your school’s provision is off-site, a walking bus will be provided to get your child from their school to their nearest afterschool club. You might be required to collect them from another before or afterschool venue specified by your child’s school.

Difference between after school activity/enrichment clubs that the school offers?

Many schools offer afterschool clubs that are run by teaching staff, or providers (or a combination of both) finishing well before 6.00pm.

Schools’ existing enrichment and extracurricular offers can interact with, complement, and support delivery of wraparound childcare provision.

Holiday childcare

The wraparound programme does not include school holidays. There are however many holiday schemes available via schools or other nearby settings.
